NO NAME KEY, Fla. — It is the promise of tranquillity that attracts the hardy few to this tiny wooded island that lies unspoiled off the road to Key West and off the grid altogether. What keeps them here is the pristine fishing, fantastic vistas, ambling Key deer and winter breezes blowing in sighs of contentment.

The Gabriola Island Health Care Foundation, Society and Auxiliary have been nominated for an Islands Trust Community Stewardship Award in recognition of them building the Gabriola Island Urgent Care Clinic. According to a Trust-wide press release sent out this past week, islanders have nominated 14 individuals and four groups for the 11th annual awards.
Jill Adamson, President of the Gabriola Health Care Foundation said, “This nomination is in reality the nomination of every Gabriolan involved in bringing the Gabriola Community Health Centre to fruition by the sweat of their brows and the emptying of their pockets. Well done each and every one of you.”
The Islands Trust Council will select the recipients during its quarterly meeting on North Pender Island in June. The award program recognizes people for work that supports the Islands Trust mandate to preserve and protect the trust area and its unique environment and amenities.
A full list of nominees can be seen at islandstrust.bc.ca.

We have a black bear on Gabriola first time for at least 10 years.
There has been a confirmed sighting of a young black bear in the area of lower Ferne Road, either last night or this morning. Other than an interest in beehives, he seems to be innocent so far.

Sailings for the MV Quinsam have been cancellled until further notice, according to the latest service notice from BC Ferries. A water taxi will be transporting walk-on passengers.
Darin Guenette, communications officer with BC Ferries confirmed a water taxi company has been contracted. The boat currently operating carries a load limit of 12 passengers. A second water taxi is due to arrive at 6:30 (coming from Salt Spring) and has a 35 person capacity. It will accept pets which must stay on laps of customers if required. Darin did not confirm whether bus students would be getting priority on the water taxi.
The first service notice dealing with the Quinsam's issues went out from BC Ferries at 11:36 am, stating the 12 pm and 12:35 pm sailings had been cancelled due to mechanical difficulties.
According to Darin, "the Quinsam is experiencing control head response difficulties. This essentially means the Right Angle Drive does not respond properly to control changes. Technicians on the way and troubleshooting is underway." Just after 3 pm, Darin updated the situation saying, "It has been determined that that the control head was not the problem after all, engineers continue to search for source of problem.
Just after 2:16 pm, BC Ferries had cancelled the 2:30 pm sailing departing Nanaimo Harbour and 3:10 departing Descanso Bay.
Passengers waiting in the lineup on the Gabriola side have been kept up-to-date by BC Ferries staff. One Gabriolan, Ron Warn, had been in the line since before noon. He called from his place in the lineup to compliment, "the young ferry worker who's been up and down the lineup several times to talk to people and let us know what was going on. He's doing great."
The 4:25 sailing on Wednedays is typically reserved for dangerous goods. There was no information available yet on whether the schedule would be changed to accomodate those passengers lined up since 11:30.

Gabriola Sounder - "Polegate"
Letter to the Editor: Re: April 30 letter, “Public consultation for public art”

Gee whiz, Hilary and Mowry Baden. I remember the many Christmas Elves who “decorated” random trees this winter. They decorated lots of branches of our trees, not just the trunks as they tried to make as large a spread as possible. I never heard any complaints that the elves didn’t ask permission. If you remember, lots of people actually enjoyed passing the trees. The results gave pleasure to those who created them and to those who passed by.

Painting Hydro Poles
Gabriola artists are adding a splash of colour to the island’s neighbourhoods with painted power poles. The project was initiated by the Gabriola Arts Council and is meant to be a fun community event people can participate and showcase the talent of local artists. “Gabriola has one of the highest concentrations of artists in Canada,” said Kathy Ramsey, council president. “This project is all about community building.”
So far the arts council has painted one pole as a test to figure out the logistics, but has four neighbourhoods – Coho Drive, Taylor Bay, Harrison Way and Folklife Village – selected for the project.
An interesting discussion about this project on the Gabriolan Blog at http://gabriolan.ca/2012/04/30/painting-gabriola-hydro-poles/
