Sue visited for 4 days. It didn't start well as her float plane was delayed for 3-4 hours by fog and rain but it did clear up. She left us to fly to Winnipeg en route to Churchill to see the polar bears.

I screwed up the tractor mower again!

The blade picked-up straw and hay just as I turned the blade off. When I turned blades on again it jammed and the belt drive seizedup and dark black smelly smoke erupted. Mower back with Henry again. Cant mow any more now anyway, we are in high fire alert, first shift only and if it doesn't rain we will go to extreme.

Medicine Wheel 1970's Reunion - Gabriola

Medicine Wheel setting up for the evening gig (7pm at the community hall). There was a reunion circle in the afternoon and an amazing number of pictures and "hippy clothes"  from the 70's on display. Hopefully copies will go to the Museum

Tim's Ulpanayana to Pandit Tejomaya

Spent a lovely morning on the beach at Orelbar Point with about 60 other people to celebrate Tim's Ulpanayana to Pandit Tejomaya. The heavy rain ended just before the ceremony and it got brighter and warmer as the ceremony progressed. I think that Tejomaya means "one who is radiating light". Very appropriate for Tim.

Medicine Wheel Reunion on Gabriola

Hear ye hear ye!

Many of you shared experiences with Medicine Wheel musical collective in and around Gabriola BC in the 70s. We invite you and everyone else who would like to celebrate the spirit of the 70s to join us for a Medicine Wheel Reunion here on Gabriola the last weekend in July.

The main event will be held at the Community Hall on Saturday July 28 from afternoon to evening, with other more informal gatherings over the weekend.  For the Concert/Dance portion of the evening, of the original eight members, we have six confirmed, including: Kelly Cavanagh (huckle), Frank Patrick (Straw), David McVittie, Cher (Starshine), Chris Sherlock and me.  We are bringing in my son Josh Gellman (bass, charango, keys, etc.) and Luke Nixon (drums) so we will have at least eight people!  We will also invite some other locals and former members to sit in, so it should be a special evening of music old and new, plus lots of other activities.

We are sending this message to spread the word to those of you who would appreciate being here for the event.

Please send it on to others you know who might like to attend.

This is a special inclusive event.  All ages and all kinds of folk are invited to attend and participate.  We are inviting our aboriginal community from Nanaimo (Snuneymuxw Band) to come and present songs and stories.  We are hoping that some of Gabriola’s next generation (our kids!) will also contribute to the musical activities.

This event is in collaboration with the Gabriola Historical and Museum Society, who have already been gathering materials and documentation of the “hippy” era on Gabriola.  If anyone has pictures, audio files, video (I guess that would be Super 8 movies!) and so on, please either send them along by email or bring them along on loan.  The Museum will have a display set up at the Community Hall, and have resources to help gather, scan and store whatever is brought.

For those who are planning to come, if you can make arrangements for yourselves for places to stay that would be great.  If you need assistance, please reply to this message and we will see how we can help.

Schedule July 28

3 PM:  We come together for the preliminary celebrations with the native community presentation.  Then Gabriolans and others from far and wide, past and present, will share stories and experiences of the spirit of the 70s through a “Medicine Wheel Community Circle” facilitated to maintain focus and time.

• 5 PM:  Vegetarian dinner around 5 ...breaking bread together

• 7 PM:  Music and dancing till we get too tired and run out of fun

Come one and all.  We look forward to seeing you again, being together and celebrating and sharing music!

Gabriola clinic shows what community can do

Gabriola clinic shows what community can do

I live on Gabriola Island, and our community has come together to build a new medical clinic which has just been completed. Apart from a grant of $100,000 from the Vancouver Island Health Authority, the whole project from start to finish has been made possible by donations from the public and volunteer workers to design and build the entire clinic.
It has taken a long time (years) and many, many fundraising efforts on the part of the volunteers. This new clinic has to be seen to be believed, along with a helicopter pad, and all the work done by Gabriola volunteers. Apart from VIHA contribution, no handouts from any other government organization. What an achievement.

Gabriola Islanders ramp up their protests over pipeline

Gabriola Islanders ramp up their protests over pipeline

It was quite a spectacle at Oceans Day on Gabriola Island as solemn local citizens in this otherwise quiet community lined up to participate in a protest against the risks of potential expansion of oil tanker traffic and pipelines along the BC coast.

Walking across a bridge one day, a man saw another man standing on the edge, about to jump off, ran over and said "Stop!
don't do it!"
"Why shouldn't I?"
"Well, there's so much to live for!"
"Like what? I'm not married, I have no job..."
"Well... are you religious or atheist?"
"Religious."
"Me too! Are you Christian, Buddhist...?"
"Christian."
"Me too! Are you catholic or protestant?"
"Protestant."
"Me too! Are you episcopalian or baptist?"
"Baptist"
"Wow! Me too! Are you Baptist church of god, or
Baptist church of the lord?"
"Baptist church of god!"
"Me too! Are you original Baptist church of god,
or are you reformed Baptist church of god?"
"Reformed Baptist church of god"
"Me too! Are you reformed Baptist church of god,
reformation of 1879, or reformed baptist church of god,
reformation of 1915?"
"Reformed Baptist church of god, reformation of 1915"

"Die, heretic scum!", the man said, and pushed him off.

The Clinic is finally opened for business.

Clinic sign updated

Gabriola Community Health Centre signYou’ve driven past this sign (on Church Street at North Road) a zillion times. Were you there for the Updating of the Sign yesterday? (Or was it Friday? I forget.) I was; I watched as a fellow modified this sign to add the now open part.
I presume he was a volunteer, and what a satisfying thing it must have been to to update that sign.

The Grand Opening will be August 5th.

Just the Bear Facts

Letter to the Editor: Dead trees and BC Hydro poles

Monday, June 4 2012
I am emailing to communicate my support for hydro pole painting.
Hydro poles are not natural. They are dead trees and they did not die by natural causes. The trees were killed by humans who then erected the dead trees to carry electricity for human consumption. If the issue was whether we should paint live trees I would argue against tree painting.
Did we, as a community, decide we wanted dead trees festooned with electrical wires – with the occasional pair of shoes or human signage to relieve the tedium – decorating our streets? I hope not, but if so, I would have voted no to that – but I was never given the choice.
Now however, we have a legacy of many dead trees attached to electrical wires circling the island with dead cement as support, not to mention all the dead tree material used in building human dwellings as these encroach on the still living, but shrinking, live tree wooded areas.
I say paint and decorate the dead trees as monuments to the ‘nature’ of human folly and the legacy of wanton killing of live things. The divide between nature and human/culture is a false divide. If we are really worried about living in the natural world perhaps we should just get rid of the BC Hydro poles. In the event that this won’t happen, I look forward to having some of Gabriola’s dead trees, including the dead tree on the street in front of my home, painted by one or many of Gabriola’s fine artists.
With all due respect,
~ Gloria Filax

Gabriola isnt the only island with a hydro pole issue

NO NAME KEY, Fla. — It is the promise of tranquillity that attracts the hardy few to this tiny wooded island that lies unspoiled off the road to Key West and off the grid altogether. What keeps them here is the pristine fishing, fantastic vistas, ambling Key deer and winter breezes blowing in sighs of contentment.
But these days, good karma is sorely missing on No Name Key. The 1,200-acre island has been riven by two warring camps of residents who have pleaded, sued, offended and, ultimately, turned their backs on each other in a fight over power, the kind that gets piped in by an electric company.

Gabriola Health Care groups up for Trust Stewardship Award

Press Release
Tuesday, May 22 2012
The Gabriola Island Health Care Foundation, Society and Auxiliary have been nominated for an Islands Trust Community Stewardship Award in recognition of them building the Gabriola Island Urgent Care Clinic. According to a Trust-wide press release sent out this past week, islanders have nominated 14 individuals and four groups for the 11th annual awards.
Jill Adamson, President of the Gabriola Health Care Foundation said, “This nomination is in reality the nomination of every Gabriolan involved in bringing the Gabriola Community Health Centre to fruition by the sweat of their brows and the emptying of their pockets. Well done each and every one of you.”

The Islands Trust Council will select the recipients during its quarterly meeting on North Pender Island in June. The award program recognizes people for work that supports the Islands Trust mandate to preserve and protect the trust area and its unique environment and amenities.
A full list of nominees can be seen at islandstrust.bc.ca.

We have a black bear on Gabriola first time for at least 10 years.

There has been a confirmed sighting of a young black bear in the area of lower Ferne Road, either last night or this morning. Other than an interest in beehives, he seems to be innocent so far.
